What is the Emergency Rental Assistance Program?

The Emergency Rental Assistance program is available to New Mexico households who need help paying for rent and utilities. This assistance can be used for past unpaid, current, and future rent and utility bills/payments.

The assistance can be used for unpaid, current and future rent and utilities.

 This assistance is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. It is assistance given to households so that they can stay in their homes rather than face eviction.

Available Assistance

Eligible households may receive up to 15 months of assistance paying for rent and utilities. Applications can be submitted by the renter in need of assistance or by a landlord on behalf of the renter.

Current and future rent and utility payments will be provided for three months at a time. Households may reapply for additional assistance at the end of the three-month period if needed until the overall time limit of 15 months for assistance is reached.

Application Process

An application for assistance may be submitted by an eligible household. The program will pay the landlord and/or the utility provider directly. In circumstances where the landlord or utility provider is unable to accept the payment directly from the program, then the applicant will receive the funds to pay their bills.

 Applicants may apply through the online application portal or download and submit the application via email at Info@RentHelpNM.org or mail to DFA, 407 Galisteo, Santa Fe, NM 87501, Attention: ERAP.

How is assistance prioritized?

The New Mexico Emergency Rental Assistance Program assigns priority to applications for individuals whose income is less than 50% of the area median income, receive unemployment benefits, or are in the eviction process. Prioritizing applications allows the program to process awards for high-priority applications more quickly, therefore keeping more families housed.

What type of assistance is available?

Where and how do I apply for rent and utility assistance?

If you live in any county in New Mexico or within the Albuquerque city limits, you can apply online at the application portal or you can submit a paper application to Info@RentHelpNM.org or mail it to: DFA: 407 Galisteo, Santa Fe, NM 87501, Attention: ERAP.

 If you live in Bernalillo County and outside of the Albuquerque city limits, apply at https://www.bernco.gov/rent.

 If you live in Doña Ana county, apply at https://www.donaanacounty.org/rent-utilities-assistance.

Is there a cap or maximum amount of assistance I can receive?

Applicants can receive up to 15 months of assistance across all programs including rent/utility, hotel, and relocation assistance.

 Applicants may reapply for additional assistance at the end of the three-month period if needed and if the 15 month time limit for assistance is not exceeded.

 For example, an applicant could receive 6 months of hotel assistance, 3 months of relocation assistance, and 6 months of rental and utility assistance. After 15 months of assistance, applicants are no longer eligible for more assistance under our program.

What is the status of my application?

What if my utility provider isn’t in the application system?

If your utility provider is not available as a vendor in the application portal, please select the “Other” option and enter your utility provider in the space indicated.

What is the Relocation Assistance Program?

The Relocation Assistance Program (RAP) may provide eligible New Mexico applicants who have yet to move into a new unit and that have been displaced for an eligible reason from a previous unit in New Mexico with first and last month’s rent, security deposit, and three months of future rent and utilities. Future utilities may be paid at an estimated average cost. If you’ve already moved into the unit please see Emergency Rental Assistance.

Please note – to be eligible for relocation assistance, the landlord must agree to participate in the program. ERAP will not issue payments to the applicant.

This program is only available for applicants in ABQ city limits and any county in New Mexico excluding Doña Ana County and Bernalillo County.

What is utility assistance?

Utility assistance can be used to pay past due, current, and future utility bills.

 Utility assistance can be used for electricity, gas, water and sewer, trash removal, fuel oil, wood, and pellets.

Bernalillo County (outside of ABQ limits) and Doña Ana County administer their own rental and utility assistance programs.

Will I receive the financial assistance payment?

What if I am missing documents for my application?

Applicants with missing documents can complete an attestation form in replacement. Please view eligible attestation forms here.

 If you submit your application with missing documents, you will be notified by a pre-audit reviewer and asked to submit missing documents or applicable attestations.

What is the Hotel Assistance Program?

The Hotel Assistance Program (HAP) may provide eligible New Mexico applicants with up to three months of future hotel or motel costs. Eligible applicants will be placed in an available participating hotel/motel with current availability.
